Volunteer Activities
CAST members act as "recruiters" for prospective and admitted students in their local area and serve as a resource for high school counselors, students and parents. They make congratulatory calls to admitted students and represent WSU at their high school's awards night or graduation ceremony. The personal attention offered by alumni can be very powerful and helpful in our recruitment efforts.Promote Scholarship Awards
In-state alumniIn the spring, in-state alumni volunteers will receive a list of students who have been offered a Regents Scholarship to attend Washington State University. You will work with the regional WSU admissions counselor to plan your participation in one or more awards nights and graduation ceremonies to present this award. Sometimes alumni may be asked to present additional WSU awards at the same event.
Out-of-state alumniIn the spring, out-of-state alumni volunteers will receive a list of students in their area who have been offered the Cougar Freshman Academic Award to attend Washington State University. Note cards and stamps will be provided to send congratulatory notes. A follow-up phone call should be made one week later to encourage students to confirm their admission in order to hold their spot at the University.
College Fairs and College Nights
In the fall and spring, available CAST members assist a WSU counselor at a college or career fair. In some cases where our counselors are not available, members may be asked to represent WSU on their own. In this case, we will send a WSU tablecloth and other materials to the CAST member.Host a Reception
Receptions are held in the summer – between the students’ junior and senior year of high school -- to recruit outstanding students and to provide them with information about WSU. Generous WSU alumni and friends host receptions for 40-50 people, including the high school students, their parents, and selected WSU faculty, staff, and students.
